The Erie Express defeated the Beaver County Bengals 47-28 to capture the 2026 PAFL league championship, adding another title to a decorated legacy. Entering the playoffs as the number five seed, the team demonstrated that commitment to player development and community engagement produces winning results on the field.
Erie, Pa, United States of America - September 11, 2026 - Erie Express Pro Developmental Football has added yet another chapter to its storied legacy by capturing the 2026 PAFL league championship with a commanding 47-28 victory over the Beaver County Bengals. The triumph marks the latest in a long line of accomplishments for one of the nation's premier pro developmental football programs.
Entering the PAFL playoffs as the number five seed, the Express defied expectations with a postseason run that showcased the depth, resilience, and cohesion the organization has cultivated since its founding in 2011 by Paul Pennington. The championship game was a dominant display from start to finish, as the Express built a decisive lead and never relinquished control against a talented Bengals squad.
The 2026 PAFL title adds to an already impressive collection of hardware for the franchise. The Express has now claimed two national championships, winning the GDFL title in 2021 and the USA Bowl in 2022. The organization has also earned three conference championships in 2021, 2024, and 2026, along with multiple division titles. Few pro developmental programs in the country can match that sustained level of excellence across multiple leagues and seasons.
What makes the Express truly unique, however, is the dual mission that drives the organization. On the field, the team competes at the highest level of developmental football. Off the field, the program serves as a launching pad for aspiring professionals. Since its inception, the Express has helped more than 109 players sign professional contracts, providing a critical pathway for former collegiate athletes and standout high school players who might otherwise never receive a second look from professional scouts.
The 2026 roster exemplified that mission. The team featured a mix of seasoned veterans and hungry newcomers, all united by a shared desire to prove themselves. Several players on this year's championship squad are expected to attract attention from professional leagues in the coming months, continuing the pipeline that has become a hallmark of the program.
The Express also recently celebrated a significant milestone by honoring 100 years of professional football in the Erie, Pa region. That centennial celebration connected the franchise to a rich gridiron tradition that stretches back a full century, reminding fans and players alike that they are part of something much larger than any single season.
Community remains at the heart of everything the organization does. Since 2016, the Express has annually hosted the Covato Memorial game, played in memory of former player Tyler Covato. The event has become one of the most anticipated dates on the schedule each year, drawing fans, families, and former players together in a celebration of life, football, and shared purpose. The memorial game reflects the values that founder Paul Pennington embedded in the organization from day one: pride, togetherness, and a commitment to lifting others up.
Looking ahead, the Express shows no signs of slowing down. With a championship roster returning key contributors and a development system that continues to attract top-tier talent from across the country, the franchise is positioned to remain a dominant force in developmental football for years to come. The 2026 PAFL championship is not just a trophy but a validation of a model that proves winning and development are not mutually exclusive.
Fans and supporters can follow the team's continued journey and stay connected with all upcoming announcements through the organization's official channels.
